Envelope Flap Considerations
There are 3 main things you’ll want to consider when selecting the right flap for you, which are security, style and insertion.
Security
Functionally you want to flap to secure the goods inside. For example, if you are inserting a heavy duty document or brochure, then a larger flap will be more appropriate as it has more glue area and therefore more hold than a shorter one.
Style
Visually, some flap styles are more associated to certain contents than others, such as greeting cards in a banker style envelope. Generally, a pointed v-flap will seem more elegant and traditional, while a straight flap more business-like and a longer flap can also appear more prestige and high end (however this is not a hard and fast rule). Design trends and personal preference play a large part in style choice, but our diagrams below of the most common types may help guide you.
Insertion
Will you be using a machine to insert the envelope contents? If so then you’ll need to check the capabilities of the machine to see whether your chosen flap style is compatible.

Frequently Asked Questions
What are the different types of envelope flaps?
The most common envelope flap types are the Baronial (pointed) flap, Euro flap, Commercial flap, Straight flap, and Square flap. Each of these styles serves a different purpose, ranging from formal invitations to standard professional business mail. Choosing the right one depends on the contents, desired style, and security needs.
What is the best envelope flap for wedding invitations?
The Baronial flap, also known as a pointed or V-flap, is considered the best choice for wedding invitations and other formal events. Its elegant triangular design adds a traditional, sophisticated, and highly-regarded touch that is popular with designers and couples alike.
What is a Euro flap envelope?
A Euro flap is a type of envelope that features a deep, pointed triangular flap. This style extends further down the back of the envelope, creating a sleek, modern, and high-end look. It is often used for luxury stationery, announcements, and formal correspondence where a contemporary aesthetic is desired.
What is a commercial flap envelope?
A commercial flap is the standard style used on most common business envelopes, such as the #10 envelope. It has a straight, shorter shape and a simple glue line, making it highly efficient for everyday office use and professional mailings. Its design is valued for its security and compatibility with automated insertion machines.
What is the difference between straight flap and square flap envelopes?
A straight flap is a standard design with a clean-cut, linear edge that is commonly seen on professional and business envelopes. A square flap, by contrast, has a longer, squared-off flap that provides a more formal appearance and offers a larger surface area for a stronger seal. The square flap is a popular choice for modern invitations and special events.
Does the envelope flap style really matter?
Yes, the envelope flap style is a critical consideration. It matters for three main reasons: security (ensuring the contents are sealed and protected), style (the impression it creates on the recipient), and insertion (ensuring it is compatible with either manual or machine-based insertion methods for your documents).
What are V-flap envelopes?
V-flap envelopes are a type of envelope that features a distinct V-shaped, or pointed, flap. This term refers to the Baronial or pointed flap designs. Their sharp triangular point creates an elegant and traditional style, often associated with formal greeting cards, wedding invitations, and classic correspondence.
